This guitar has been produced by Martin as a special limited edition of just 175 guitars. It's designed to closely mimic and resemble Elvis Presley's famous 1955 D-28 including being fitted with a leather covering just as Elvis had to protect his own guitar at the time.

This unique cover was made by Charles Underwood for Elvis' guitar and made it instantly recognizable thanks to the guitars appearance in so many TV shows and concert photos. The case which comes with the D-28M is an oversized Geib style hardshell designed to fit the guitar and its cover perfectly.

The woods used in the building of this guitar are quite special. It features a very rare Madagascar rosewood back and side which is said to very closely resemble Brazilian rosewood. Of course due to the destruction of rainforest in Brazil and the governments attempts to stem the flow of this destruction, Brazilian rosewood although being wonderful for guitars is no longer on order.

The details of this guitar, as you might expect given its price tag and heritage, are quite impressive and it's obvious that Martin have taken the production of this guitar very seriously. It's made with a lot of love and aside from all the Elvis motifs and special touches the sound is quite amazing and powerful.

A number of classic features from Martin acoustic guitars of the 1950's have been preserved such as a 1-11/16' neck and Grover nickel tuners with the small oval buttons. The Martin logo on the headstock has also been taken from the old style decal of the 1950's.

History

In early 70's Martin Guitars started out a new distinct guitars named Sigma to compete with the influx of economical imported guitars from Japan. The Martin Sigma guitar was generally an acoustic dreadnought, although there were stage & classical guitars made in that time.

Martin sigma guitars were discontinued in '07. The normal Sigma is recognized by a deep, rich sound though not equivalent to the best of Martin's guitars, was sometimes a great deal better than other imports. (The guitars were produced in Japan, then later Korea and Taiwan, following the direct guidelines of Martin guitars.)

Made in the USA?

The Sigma line of guitars were named by their high quality and the materials used. For instance, the manufacturer branded them D for dreadnought, M for Mahogany, and R for rosewood 1-7, 7 being the very best quality in the line.

There's debate regarding where the Martin Sigma guitars were really being made. Owners of many of the guitars swear they were produced in the united states as the back stamp or tag says so.

The truth is that none of their guitars were entirely produced in the united states. Occasionally, the materials were cut and produced in Japan and the pieces were constructed in the united states.

It's not possible to say that any Sigma guitar was sourced, produced, cut, and assembled in the united states alone, though.

How to Find One

As the Sigma brand has been discontinued, it's rare that you'll get it in your standard music shop. But, there are still places where they could be found, including in 2nd hand stores.

You might have luck looking in craigslist or Amazon for people selling their Sigma guitars. Be cautious when purchasing on the web.

It is always better to be able to inspect the piece in person. Musical instruments are delicate, and you do not want to rely on a picture alone.

The story behind one of America's most famous guitars began on January 31, 1796, in Markneukirchen, Germany, with the birth of Christian Frederick Martin, Sr. Born into a long line of cabinet makers, Christian Frederick took up the family craft at the early age of 15, when he left his hometown and traveled to Vienna to apprentice with Johann Stauffer, a renowned guitar maker.

Martin and company selling guitars through high profile retailers in New York City, and through other busy ports of call. Additionally, guitars showed up along many cities serviced by waterways, as this was prior to the railroads crossing the continent.

Martin's shipping records made frequent mention of sales in Boston, Albany, Philadelphia, Richmond, Petersburg, Nashville, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and New Orleans. Business in the period was obviously satisfactory, for in an advertisement in 1850 the company declared, "C. F. Martin Guitar Maker, respectfully informs the musical public generally that the great favor bestowed upon him has induced him to enlarge his factory, in order to supply the increasing demand for his instruments."

Martin Guitar has always adhered to the highest standards of musical excellence, and it has also been managed very competently. This probably explains the company's remarkable success throughout its many years in business. Their choice of products and their marketing have changed over time, but the company's basic attitude to guitar-making has always been the same. Frank Henry Martin is known for having said to potential buyers, "A good guitar cannot be made for the same price as a poor one, but nobody regrets the extra cost of a good guitar.

1. The Look. Many people say that Gibson guitars are some of the most beautifully crafted guitars in the world. This is, of course, a matter or personal preference but you cannot deny the beauty of a Les Paul.

2. Les Paul. This Jazz Guitarist/Inventor pioneered the manufacturing of electric guitars. He is now recognized as a household name because of his signature guitar which bears his name.

The Body Of The Martin D-28 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar

The body size of the Martin D-28 dreadnought guitar is known as a D-14 Fret. Its total length is 40 1/2". Its body length is 20" with a width of 15 5/8" and depth of 4 7/8". The ornamentation and styling of this guitar is minimal. The binding of D-28 is of White Boltaron.

The soundboard top of the D-28 is made of solid Sitka Spruce top with a polished gloss finish. The top of the D-28 has a multiple Black/White Boltaron inlay. The top braces of the D-28 is made of 5/16'' solid Sitka Spruce and is produced in the standard ''X'' Bracing pattern.

The D-28 has a Rosette of Black/White Boltaron inlay made from old style 28 wood fiber. The pick guard of the D-28 is coloured black.

The D-28 has a standard belly style bridge made from solid black Ebony. It has a 16'' radius, compensated, bone saddle. The bridge string spacing of the D-28 is 2-1/8''. The bridge endpins are white with black dots.

The back of the D-28 is made from polished, solid East Indian Rosewood and has Sitka "Golden Era" back braces. The back of the D-28 has a black and white Boltaron inlay with old style 28 purfling.

The side of the D-28 is made from polished, solid East Indian Rosewood. There is no inlay on the sides of these guitars.

The end piece of the Martin D-28 guitar is made of white Boltaron with an inlay of black and white Boltaron. The electronics is optional with these guitars.

The Sitka Spruce tops and East Indian Rosewood back and sides are designed to resonate. That combined with the top and back bracing, give these guitars a very well balanced bass, volume and tonal qualities.

The neck of the D-28 is made from selected Hardwood. The D-28 has a low profile neck shape with a satin polished finish. The neck is designed to allow a medium to high action, which feels great all over the neck.

The nut of the D-28 is made of bone. The headstock of the D-28 is of a solid diamond design with a square taper. The head plate of the D-28 is made of solid East Indian Rosewood with raised gold foil.

The fingerboard of the Martin D-28 guitar has the old style 28 inlays and is made of solid black Ebony with a scale length of 25.4''. There are 20 frets on the fingerboard including 14 clear frets. The fingerboard width at the nut is 1-11/16'' and at the 12th fret it's 2-1/8''.

The tuning machines of the Martin D-28 guitar is of Chrome enclosed design with large buttons. They are excellent turners that have silky smooth tuning capabilities and keep the guitar in tune.

The recommended strings for the Martin D-28 guitar is the Martin SP Lifespan Phosphor Bronze Medium Gauge (MSP7200) strings. Other guitar players also use Elixir light to medium gauge strings or D'addario EXP11 Bronze Acoustic Strings with great results. The D-28 requires medium type strings to get the best results.
